What Is PMA?
A Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) part is a reverse engineered part that can be interchanged with the existing OEM part in an aircraft. The PMA part goes through a rigorous process to gain FAA Approval to be used as an alternate to the OEM part. It typically provides a significant cost savings and is often engineered with a more robust design. This can result in greater reliability, longer on wing time and reduced turnaround time. Once approved by the FAA, PMA parts can be used on ANY aircraft that uses that specific OEM part.

What Is MRO/DER Repair?
A Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) is a reference guide used in the aerospace industry to standardize part maintenance and repair procedures according to FAA requirements. The OEM develops a comprehensive guide with technical information, maintenance recommendations and repair procedures for that part. Repair technicians at approved repair stations must follow the CMM when making repairs. The CMM helps to reduce malfunction and safety issues when maintenance and repairs are needed.
WHAT IS A DER REPAIR?
A Designated Engineering Representative (DER) Repair is an alternative to replacing aircraft parts that are worn or damaged through the OEM. When choosing a DER repair, the cost is significantly reduced because often the damaged component only requires minor repairs rather than complete overhaul. The CMM is still followed but the DER repair is usually improved upon from the standard repair. Additionally, DER repair time is usually under 30 days whereas replacing the part completely through the OEM can take several months, leading to extensive downtime.
CMM/DER REPAIRS

OOP Parts
An Owner/Operator Produced (OOP) part is generally a highly used part that can be costly and difficult to replace through the OEM. Occasionally the airline has a specific need they would like to address with a modification to the existing OEM part that is not addressed with a PMA part. This allows them to customize the part specifically to their aircraft. The FAA allows reproduction of parts already used on an aircraft as long as the new part meets the same guidelines as the original part.
OOP parts can ONLY be used as a replacement part on a SPECIFIC aircraft once approved by that airline. It CANNOT be used on other aircrafts unless also approved by them.
